Women's involvement in government is vital to the social and economic well being of communities, particularly at the local government level.

To encourage more women into local government, a co-operative approach has been adopted by the State Government and the Australian Local Government Women's Association (ALGWA).

ALGWA's principal aim is to support women's participation in Local Government. The National Framework for Women in Local Government was produced by ALGWA following extensive consultation with Women in Local Government in November 2001 to ascertain the issues effecting women's participation in Local Government in Australia.
